Volunteering
Volunteers have been an important part of the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre since the early 1900s, with the creation of the Royal Ottawa Sanatorium Auxiliary.
Today, the group is known as the Royal Ottawa Volunteer Association and has over 225 volunteers. They devote thousands of hours every year to assisting staff and patients at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, Royal Ottawa Place, the Brockville Mental Health Centre and the Secure Treatment Unit.
Volunteers help improve patients' quality of life and also raise funds for the hospital by operating a variety of ventures including a used clothing shop (donations of gently used clothing are gratefully accepted), the beauty salon, and the coffee shop - all of which are open to the public. In addition they hold an annual comedy night as well as the sale of Christmas trees in December and other special activities. Check out updated information on the annual comedy event at www.royalottawacomedynight.com.
