The University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research strives to create scientific knowledge to improve mental health and well-being both locally and globally.
The University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research works in partnership with the University of Ottawa, as well as the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, which is a teaching hospital of the University of Ottawa and is networked with Queen's University and Carleton University.
Ultimately, the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research's vision is to be a premier research institute with national and international 'centre of excellence' status that continuously improves mental health and well-being through leadership, collaborative discoveries and innovation in research, patient care and education.
The University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research is also world-renowned for the ongoing development and research of effective diagnosis and treatment strategies for mental illness, and for encouraging collaboration and professional development among mental health researchers at the local, provincial and national levels.
Professional staff are involved in teaching and research that facilitates quality, specialized mental health treatment. The University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research promotes the integration of research and clinical care as the best means of educating health care providers and of improving patient care, treatment and recovery.
Through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaborations, the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research is currently conducting leading-edge research in the areas of:
- mood disorders;
- anxiety disorders;
- schizophrenia;
- youth psychiatry;
- forensic psychiatry;
- neuroelectrophysiology; and
- sleep disorders.
Currently, the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research is integrating a variety of research platforms including neuroimaging, translational neuroscience and program evaluation into its current infrastructure.
Together, these platforms will facilitate the integration of findings from basic research into clinical care.
